Pope Benedict XVI is offering an opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence on February 11, the World Day of the Sick.

The Pope's decree grants a plenary indulgence to baptized persons who follow the usual conditions (see below), with the soul completely removed from attachment to any form of sin, participate devoutly next Feb. 11 in the Our Lady of Lourdes in France or in any other place established by the ecclesiastical authority in a sacred ceremony celebrated to implore God through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes for the ends of the World Day of the Sick.

Individuals who can not take part in the celebrations because they are caring for the sick with also gain the plenary indulgence if on that day the give at least for one hour their charitable assistance to the sick as if they did it for Christ himself.

Also, the plenary indulgence may be obtained by those faithful who because of illness, age or any reason of this sort can not take part in the ceremony so long as "they unite themselves spiritually with desire in the mentioned celebration, pray devoutly for all the sick and offer God, through the Virgin Mary, their physical and spiritual sufferings."

 The usual conditions:

  • Sacramental confession. A single sacramental confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences; but Communion must be received and prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff must be recited for the gaining of each plenary indulgence.
  • Eucharistic Communion.
  • Prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff. The condition of praying for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary; nevertheless, each one is free to recite any other prayer according to his piety and devotion.
  • It is further required that all attachment to sin, even venial sin, be absent. If the latter disposition is in any way less than perfect or if the prescribed three conditions are not fulfilled, the indulgence will be partial only.
